Anybody who needs to replace a short run of coax should definitely consider using this "mini-8," e.g. RG-8X coax. The attenuation or line loss is slightly less with it, than with RG-58. However, neither are good for very long runs. Twenty-five feet of RG-58 has an 87.4% power efficiency. RG-8X is a bit better at 89.9%. Where it really shines is lower freqs on the HF ham bands. The line attenuation is 0.5 dB vs. 0.6 dB at 25 feet. This doesn't sound like much, but at longer runs, it adds up as the attenuation roughly doubles for the x2 factor in the line length. Anyway, it's a bit thicker and I think more durable. Durability is a big plus. Just remember to avoid creasing it as much as possible. You change the dielectric properties and can raise the SWR. One advantage of RG-58 is that it does have a poly core, vs. the foam dielectric core of RG-8X. 8X can be prone to have an unstable dielectric field or even arching if it is wound too tight or goes through a sharp bend. However, for CB use or short runs for VHF/FM or similar, it will do fine. For base stations, hopefully people already know to use much thicker coax for runs much over 100 feet. If you plan to run a lot of watts through it, keep that in mind...
